Welcome

Hello, my name is Sarah Loughran. I am studying for my degree in Graphic & Media Design at HCA, graduating in July 2013. Enjoy looking through my website, the blog is where I document through many projects like a sketchbook, so there's a lot of raw stuff in there. My Portfolio is pretty vacant but that will fill up soon as I have the end of year show to prepare for in June 2013 and that's when I will be able to display final solutions. Please contact me if you would like to discuss employment or even small jobs you think I may be suitable for. I like to work and play with Photoshop, Illustrator, CorelDraw, After Effects, Wordpress, 3ds MAX, InDesign, Dreamweaver, Premiere Pro, Cinema 4D. I'm not afraid to get stuck in and learn new techniques/software and I'm quite Internet/technology savvy, fitting most comfortably amongst other geeks! :-)

Kes Booklet

May 21, 2013, DVD Set

The design for the Kes booklet is based on the countryside; barn, wood, trees, dirt. This is the feeling I get from his daily life and actions with his bird. Also Northern life, depressing and unemployment worries make it a bit dismal. I used a mixture of textures and brushes to create a grunge effect… Continue reading →

Quadrophenia Booklet

May 21, 2013, DVD Set

The compilation of this booklet was not without stress. Lots of ideas, I wanted to follow the theme of the first one, Kes, and have polaroid style images from the movie throughout the booklet but I came across some problems when trying to rotate transparency .tiff’s. I went back to the drawing board and designed… Continue reading →

Sunday Booklet

May 21, 2013, DVD Set

This was the last booklet for the DVD set that I designed. I left it till last because I was finding it hard to design something appropriate, but I think I have succeeded. On the front cover there is a chair that’s facing forwards. This is to represent the actress Glenda Jackson, in one scene… Continue reading →

i-zine amazing cover

May 21, 2013, Magazine Grid

I really want a good cover image for the front of my i-zine magazine. I’ve thought about taking the main featured stories elements and putting them in a cauldron to melt together a bit. My initial thoughts are in the following sketch. This is the trippy from Aldridge with the road for the transport type… Continue reading →

Something to design

May 17, 2013, Self-initiated

For my self-initiated project I’ve been a bit stumped looking around for something to focus my abilities on and make something good. I’ve done a bit of research into self-initiated projects and found future farmers and creative allies a good starting point. Other places like 99designs could offer something also. What I would quite like… Continue reading →

Making the Matchbox

May 17, 2013, DVD Set

I made the matchbox a couple of weeks back but haven’t had the time to make a follow up post about it. So here is the first full-size prototype (printed on textured card). I had to fix some mounting board to it so it would be more rigid and be able to accommodate 3 DVD… Continue reading →

Measuring population

May 17, 2013, Measure

I’ve been trying out so many different ways of displaying the data of 250 births per minute and 105 deaths per minute that I’m not sure I will be able to document it all here. So here is some of the work I’ve done that’s brought me to the final solution of filming drips into… Continue reading →

i-zine font

May 17, 2013, Magazine Grid

After conducting a few font choice print outs I settled on the Helvetica Lt Std family, with Helvetica Neue Lt Std arriving at a close second. Some more research into design magazines revealed that font family adverts take up a whole page, which I thought may be a good idea to include if I have… Continue reading →

Admiring Adbusters

May 17, 2013, Magazine Grid

The magazine project has been left on the shelf since Christmas, this was a dreaded return and many plans to imitate an admired style that I recently discovered in the quarterly: AdBusters. What a great “zine” they have created with brand and style. There is something quire anarchic about the whole zine. So I paid… Continue reading →

More moire

May 15, 2013, Collections & Obsessions

I was planning on making a view port and slide the scanner in front of the animation. Then I thought about make the 3D room in perspective, but just from halftone words. Unfortunately, this may be the project that has to be binned because of time limits. I do enjoy playing with tricks of the.… Continue reading →

Kes Film Essay

April 29, 2013, DVD Set

I’ve planned to produce either a “compact” 8 page foldout printed on A3 or a “spacier” 16 page foldout printed on A2. The problem is double sided printing on A2, I need to find out if that’s possible, or I may have to replace that with 2x 8 page foldouts (preferably not). For this to… Continue reading →

Matchbox Foldout

April 28, 2013, DVD Set

I have designed an actual size matchbox foldout, now I need to get the drawer measured up and the interior designed for partitioning if there is enough space. I’ve tried to keep it as small as possible so that I’m able to make and print it. taken from the design of this box… I’ve found… Continue reading →

Moire patterns

April 27, 2013, Collections & Obsessions

When you overlap materials with repetitive lines, you create moire patterns. When you look through one chain-link fence at another, you sometimes see a pattern of light and dark lines that shifts as you move. This pattern, called a moire pattern, appears when two repetitive patterns overlap. Moire patterns are created whenever one semitransparent object… Continue reading →
